How Memory Becomes a Single Image

We say that we “store” memories, but memory does not store. It flows through us—like light, like water, like scent—leaving only traces in its wake. Those traces accumulate, layer by layer, until one day they condense into a single image.

I often wonder: is what I remember something that truly happened, or something I wished into being? I cannot recall my mother’s voice, but I remember vividly the quality of afternoon light that once carried it. Some conversations are gone entirely, yet the smell of that room—old books, cold air—still lingers at the edge of my senses.

Time does not distort memory. It refines it. It strips away the extraneous and leaves only what is most essential—the purest sensation. And so, after enough years have passed, what remains is not a narrative but an image. A single frame, a shade of color, a particular quality of light. That is memory’s truest language.

When I paint, I reach toward those images. The moment the brush touches canvas, memory stirs again—more vivid, more silent than before. Images come from somewhere deeper than words. They are the crystallized residue of sensation, risen up through all the layers of forgetting. That is what art is. That is what memory is.
